Definition

Form describes any or all of the characteristics of individual Elements or of a whole Composition. The 'formal' qualities of a piece of design are what we initially come in contact with as viewers, and it is through the form of a design piece that a viewer can recognize and extract meaning. A pencil drawing of a refrigerator is an instance of form in that it's a flat arrangement of lines and shapes with a bit of detectable texture from the pencil, but when confronted with such a thing, most people in the civilized world probably understand it as a refrigerator. A photo of a fridge is generally still understood to represent a fridge as well, but a photo has a different set of 'formal' qualities than the pencil drawing. The formal qualities of an element can drastically change the interpretations that a viewer will have about it. A fridge rendered in crayons evokes something different than one rendered in blood, for instance.
