Composition

Definition
In graphic design, a composition is any arrangement of elements in the visual plane. Essentially, a composition is what a designer creates every time they are engaged in the visual design process.
Because the goal of graphic design is to communicate a message/idea visually, compositions tend to be structured to facilitate that communication. By no means does that goal discount the value of aesthetics, however. Viewers cannot begin to decrypt the meanings embedded in any given composition before they are confronted by the visual form of the composition (any more than one can begin deciphering words on a page before they see the page or the letters). And if a viewer is turned off or disinterested by the aesthetic value of a composition, they're less likely to care about its content. As a result, aesthetic concerns are highly important in making a successful composition, and the goal of most design processes is to find a way to create meaning and/or function while addressing aesthetic concerns.
