Trio of Awards For Designer/Editor

Three for Three in Online Competitions

Phoenix, Arizona December 13, 2007

With her third win in three attempts, designer and editor Carol Benwell is making a habit of coming out on top in online competitions. In the last year and a half, she has won a trio of prestigious online competitions for video animation and graphics that have made the industry take notice.

"I'm thrilled that all of my efforts have brought these accolades," says Benwell, "but I'm really interested in continuing to learn and making some connections in the post-production and motion graphics industry."

The awards that she has collected are nothing to sneeze at -- the sponsors include some of the most prominent names in branding and the judges are experts in the design and animation fields.

In 2006, Benwell won the inaugural online challenge at Coca-Cola.com which involved creating a video expressing "The Essence of You" in the Coke style. Her winning animation was a "small slice of motion graphics," with illustrations and stylized photos blended into a landscape of her life's elements. Judges were from award-winning advertising and music video production houses Weiden + Kennedy, Nexus & Transistor Studios, amongst others.

Following up that successful effort was a self-produced video that won MTV and HP's "What's Your Clip?" contest and ran nationally on the MTV networks in late 2007.

"That was a real challenge," she explains. "I created an animated computer desktop that had all of the programs and designs that represent my working day, plus some scribbles and sketches that help show what my creative thinking is all about."

"Getting aired on MTV was a real plus," she notes. And another award was added to her resumé, which includes experience in graphic and web design, freelance editing, motion graphics, and advertising. She's currently happy working out of her Phoenix-based creativeshock studios, and says she hopes the burgeoning film industry there allows her to stay local and take on some Hollywood-sized projects.

"I really like combining graphics with music and making a piece that works on different levels," she says. Recent work she's taken on includes an opening for a syndicated TV show, a promotional video for TPC Scottsdale, as well as a music video and website for the band Trashcan Sinatras.

Topping off her award-winning run, Benwell recently won the Avid "Expose Yourself" video contest, in recognition of her editing reel. The contest was run by Avid, one of the top names in editing software, and was judged by three editing professionals. The "Billy" Award is given to a student editor who shows outstanding potential and promises the recipient industrywide exposure.

"There's no secret to winning contests like these," she insists. "I've been very lucky, but I've put in a lot of hard work."
