3:AM Design is a thoroughly caffeinated boutique-style studio located in downtown Toronto's club district. A 2,000 sq. ft hybrid of traditional design studio, conceptual laboratory and video and animation facility. The brainchild of Adam Christl and Jody Poole, 3:AM Design was formed in the fall of 2002.
But how'd it all begin?
After high school Adam Christl realized the party was officially over and found himself at a crossroad: He could enter the Shaolin temple and fulfill a lifelong dream of kungfu and ninjas or get some sort of secondary education. The decision was obvious and so he went to art school and majored in new media with the emphasis in film and video studies. At the time his two areas of interest were editing and directing - both felt like they were the closest ways to be integral to the storytelling process. Immediately after graduating Adam decided to bounce on his student loan and hitchhike out west and live the glamorous life of a glorified wino. Of course, once again, all good things must come to an end and soon it came time to embark on a career so he worked freelance in various film roles - everything from grip to gaffer's assistant to AD with the occasional directing project on independent music videos. He soon realized that a lot of film work was basically a series of different jobs titles that all equaled the same thing - heavy lifting. This divine revelation led him towards the post production side of the industry where he worked for several years and during that time met up with Jody Poole.
Jody Poole, also known as "the other guy", studied at Seneca College where he graduated from the newly formed Digital Media Design program. It was the first time the school at offered a digital media course and as such many of the course that were taught quickly outdated themselves. While many of his classmates explored ascii-based animation as a potential career choice, Jody followed the scent of new money and jumped onboard the dot-com gravy train. He worked at various corporate multimedia houses, designing interactive projects for various big corporations sucha as Labatt's, Toyota and Compaq, all the while keeping the dream alive that he would be drafted by the Utah Jazz in the upcoming NBA draft. When Kaniel Dickens was selected 50th overall in 2000, Jody decided to shift gears and focus on getting his own studio off the ground. 3 years later, the dream had come true... with the studio, he's still waiting to hear from the Jazz....
Jody and Adam joined forces and started a mo-graph and design company in a shared studio with another group of shadowy friends only known as Ghostmilk. 3 years later they’ve since moved out of the shared space and recently expanded into what they are now, while occasionally returning to steal Ghostmilk's stationary. Other than the occasional wistful daydream of how life could have been being the first shaolin NBA star things are pretty sweet. They have plans to make a movie of their exploits starring Rob Shneider in the near future.
